Marilyn Kanes is the Makeup Doctor. She lives in San Carlos, CA with her husband and young son.
Marilyn is a cosmetics consultant who works with individuals of all ages, from older women to adolescents, from weddings to personal color sessions -- she's even done theatrical makeup including children's theater. Her passion is to make the great-looking cosmetic techniques used by the pros available and affordable to all.
Marilyn has worked as an in-store consultant for Chanel, Laura Mercier and MD Skincare, among others. She has taken makeup artistry courses from well-known studios such as Last Looks Makeup Academy, MAC and NK Makeup, with emphasis on advanced color theory, basic facial anatomy, lighting theory, custom blending, eye shape shading and positioning, and thousands of facial combinations. Marilyn also studied the Leatrice Eiseman course "More Alive with Color" to add to her current knowledge.
She has assisted at professional makeup courses, has been a featured speaker on cosmetics and the history of makeup at Bay Area community centers, and has done makeup for the El Dorado Musical Theater company in El Dorado County, California. Marilyn has also designed makeup for Lyric Threatre in San Jose, and the Saratroga Drama Goup (Now the South Bay Musical Theatre) in Saratoga . In addition, Marilyn is the automatic "go to" person when it comes to questions of period makeup and period design - even if the period in question is now!
Marilyn's background is diverse and creative. She studied theater arts at San Francisco State University, and for many years ran a family business -- Silicon Valley's largest large commercial photo lab.
She is a trained dancer, actress and singer, and has performed locally for over 25 years. Some of her credits include musical theater at San Jose Civic Light Opera --"42nd Street", "Follies", and "La Cage Aux Folles", and more recently running and performing in her newly acquired company, "A Mystery by Design".
Marilyn is now working on the makeup for South Bay Musical Theatre's production of "Ain't Misbehavin" - directed by Eugene Barry-Hill, and is consulting with EDMT in their upcoming production of "Cats."
Marilyn is currently working on the development of makeup courses to be given in the Bay Area.
